Safety is our first priority - Stauffer Chemical Co Cleanup

“Safety is our first priority” is COMANCO’s safety motto, and it’s especially true during our work at the Stauffer Chemical Company Superfund Cleanup in Tarpon Spring, FL. As seen above, our crews are taking the extra safety measure of stretching for a few minutes before starting work in the morning. This is a new technique for us and superintendent Jorge Barrantes reports it’s been very successful.

A lot of the industrial work we do is about creating safe places for disposal/storage of waste created as a by-product of necessary industries such as phosphate. At the Stauffer Chemical site we are helping protect the beautiful waters of the Anclote River, a popular recreational water body.

Stauffer_chemical_sept10

COMANCO is on-site in Tarpon Springs with Envirocon as part of the closure of an old Stauffer Chemical elemental phosphorus plant. Stauffer, in cooperation with the FL DEP, has been working on the remediation, clean-up and closure of this plant which is located along the Anclote River. COMANCO is installing a bridging layer over unstable soils as well as installing a 40 mil geosynthetic cap over the remediated elemental phosphorus, for a total of 2.2 million sq ft installed. We are proud to be part of this environmentally responsible clean-up effort helping keep Florida’s waters pristine.

COMANCO attends FL SME Annual Scholarship BBQ

Several dozen COMANCO employees came out to support the Florida SME’s annual scholarship fundraising bbq this past Saturday in Lakeland. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) hosts the event to fundraise for its Academic Scholarships, which are awarded to deserving high school seniors, based on need, who study technical related curriculums at Florida’s Universities. COMANCO is proud to support this community fundraising and thanks all the other participating companies for helping develop the next generation of mining & metallurgy experts.
